The May flies.

MAYFLY: a short-lived, slender insect with delicate, transparent wings and two or three long filaments on the tail. It lives close to water, where the chiefly herbivorous aquatic larvae develop.

They appear for just one day in May across England where they spend the one day that they are alive flittering through the air en masse trying to find a mate. Some are eaten by fish, some are eaten by birds, others are trampled under foot or splattered by car windshields some surely die of old age, but all are dead in the short space of a day and their like wont be seen again till one May Day next year.

You awake to the knowledge that you literally have only 24 hours to live. In fact there is a clock that ticks away to emphasize the fact.

What ever happens you will be dead within the 24 hour time period from which you were born.

In that brief period you have no incentive to learn to speak or read and write, there's no use building a home that you'll never have time to sleep in nor do you see a point in creating a civilization. No clothes, no home, just the primal instinct to eat, drink, fuck and survive.

24 hours alive is short time to fill and soon you'll be spending an eternity being dead, being nothing, which is in the big scheme of things certainly a downer that motivates you to enjoy what little time alive that you have.

Why when time is marching towards your death are you still wasting your limited time reading this?

The day starts full of wonder at new discoveries that delight, but increasingly as the clock ticks down towards your imminent demise, you are becoming aware of your own mortality and get increasingly nervous.

There on the floor all along has been a small box. You finally go to pick it up, opening it up you find inside a large cube with a button and a set of instructions.

THE EVER-FREEZE-OMATIC

DIRECTIONS:

Press button to freeze time for an eternity.

This may or may not be your salvation.

You have three foreseeable options;

1. While the world is bright and new, while you are still happy you can press the button at midday. You will be preserved in a state of happiness for eternity, but you will never get to experience the full day, you are sacrificing half of your life to a press of a button, dwelling too long on this thought already is depressing you and that is an emotion that you do not want to be frozen for eternity with.

2. Wait till the very end of you twenty four hour clock and at say ten seconds to midnight you press the button, but ... you've spent the last portion of the day getting ever more depressed at the thought of your short pointless life and now you fear being frozen in angst for ever.

3. Maybe you dismiss the button altogether, letting eternity swallow you up. Easy come easy go having experienced the full 24 hours perhaps you're content to slip into the murky black from whence you came?

Additions:

Want to know what living only in daylight is like then move to Norway or Alaska for six months during the summer when there is no night for months on end, vice versa during the never ending nights during the winter months.

Birth of an adult should seem like the blade runner 2024 film when the replicants are created whole slipping out of a plastic bag, not speaking, just glistening in some fluid, echoed in the alien movies that have the stasis machines, or the Matrix all have sleeping people in slime boxes even Luke Skywalker is in a scene where he is in some kind of gook when ill.

Scenery may not change much as how far can one go in a day and there really would be zero civilization to inhabit. I'd like to film in the mountains, but as the main character is not dressed then I'm not getting busted for public indecency after a dog walker finds me filming in the buff half way up a mountain. So will be using a cloth painters drape as a backdrop to be able to film an outdoors scene indoors. maybe a cave like scenario instead which is fine as it will echo Neanderthal qualities or the womb / burial chamber for birth and death.

A dilemma akin to the choice whether to take the Red pill or the blue pill.
