Palmer-Project Brief

Shannon Palmer Video Brief The ART: I want to evoke feelings of good memories in the viewers. I am highlighting that even though people lose things or other people, these things can live on inside of you, and then they really aren’t gone forever. I want to do some hazy shots trying to convey losing memories, as well as longer shots on important items cut in with the scene of me reading the poem.  HAL 9000 For this video, I want to focus on the aspect of slowly losing your mind, or succumbing to mental illness. I want to play with the audio, chop it up and add some effect to make it seem like a voice inside someone’s head. I want shots of someone laying down, recounting things, yet realizing that they a are slipping away.

The Art: For this video, I  am wanting to go for an eerie, sad effect. So far I was thinking of showing the process of someone preparing to commit suicide. I do not want it to be graphic, just to hint at the idea if this is not too harsh to produce for the class. In between this story, I want to play memories that person has had and how they act in them. Over the clips I will play the audio of the poem and during the memories, and I think I want to try to have the person lip sync the words during the suicide.  Hal: I am not exactly sure if this is the idea I want to go for but so far I was thinking of doing a kidnapping. There will be a masked person driving a car and they have someone they kidnapped wrapped in a sheet in the trunk. The person wrapped up will be saying "Hal's" recording.  I think I want to do this by having the person kidnapped seem tired and out of it since the audio is rather slow and robotic. However I am still not totally set on this idea. ...

One Art, by Elizabeth Bishop: This is going to be mostly audio of me reading the poem in an upbeat, carefree tone, while the camera slowly pans over and sometimes pauses on various small objects, such as tokens of memory, and textures, such as fabrics.   The video will be black and white.   There will be some shots of me off center and out of focus. Hal: I am going to make a black mass out of fabric that will symbolize my “shadow self,” which I will be leaving behind.   The black mass will be the computer voice and I will be breaking up with it, while filming it, so the video will be shot mostly from my perspective.   However, I will also include shots of myself as I am contemplating if I am making the right decision.

Brief 1: "One Art" For this film, I have recruited a person to read the poem on camera. This person is very special to me and has experienced a lot of loss in her day and done it with (as far as I can see) grace. I am thinking she will set the tone for my film, so I am anxious for Wednesday to see what comes of it. I have already started filming some more somber shots outdoors. I am thinking that there won't be a lot of action in the film, but a peaceful and somber and reflective tone to them. Maybe hinting at the past and our family's past. I think I will include some pan overs of mementos and possibly some old photos. Audio will be the poem obviously, with some sounds reminiscent of time passing, such a clock ticking or just some everyday sounds like water dripping from snow melt or so.  Brief 2: Deactivation This film should be more of a challenge. It is interesting to place this unique audio file into another context. One idea that I had was filming a frustrated ...

Topic 1 The “One Art” poem, by Elizabeth Bishop, will be used alongside a musical element. I will be baking something inspired by my deceased grandpa's favorite sweets. Topic 2 The main plot will be involving the relationship between a lost person and a talking GSP that doesn't seem to be functioning right.

Film no. 1: One Art by Elizabeth Bishop For this film, I will be using mostly L cut since that is common for voice overs. Also I want the audio video to be in black and white. I will show a close up of the actor's mouth/eyes  as he reads the poem. This will have dramatic lighting. For the visual portion, I will be using mostly straight cuts. I'm going to have a long pause in the audio to create some background story for my character. This break from the poem will start with a J cut. This video will follow a man in the military. The environment for the video will be outside and mountainous, maybe in a bar, and in a greenhouse or garden if possible. This film will focus on the art of loosing one's past and learning to live with it. Film no. 2: The Deactivation of HAL 9000   For this film, I will be using a mix of J and L cuts. The J cuts will be used to build anticipation in the film. The audio is the HAL recording. I may rearrange it to fit the story better. This film wil...
